Venison pie, fried potatoes, and fresh vegetables.

“Vern knows what he’s doing in the kitchen, yes?” Marida asked with a knowing grin at my hundredth moan.

“God, yeah.” I heaped another healthy portion of the pie on my plate. The crust was golden, perfectly crusted. The man was a genius.

We had avoided speak of Keeper’s, but I was ready for a few answers—not about Keeper’s specifically, but this place. These people. Her.

“You have magic?”

She licked her lips. “I do. When the wall erupted most of the magic became subdued. I only have a fraction of the magic I should have for my age. Around puberty one with magic develops a large well of it, but with the wall taking most of the lands magic with its bulk and blocking the reserves, it has dampened magic users—what few of us that are left.”

I sucked in a breath. “You should be more powerful?”

She gave me a solemn smile. “Yes. Magic users have a well of inner magic, but it has always been tied to the land. It can be advanced and heightened with objects made of magic. Like your portal gemstones. Those were created from the earth of Evirness, so they are infused with the land's magic. I have no idea why Evirness chose to give magic to me. No one knows how magic use is granted. A blessing from the gods, or Evirness’ choice, the answer is still unclear.”

“It is not hereditary?”

Marida shook her head. “Completely random, but I’d imagine there’s some archaic reasoning.” She gave me a long, assessing look. “Except the Keepers. That is the only magic, that we are aware of, that is passed from lineage.”

“The wall interferes with your magic?”

“It does. It dampens it. I can feel the depth of my well of power, but I can’t even grasp half of it. I can only do simple things unless I have a magical object.”

“Like a staff?” I had seen a lot of movies with sorcerers and wizards using staffs.

She cocked her head and sent me a small smile. “Yes, actually staffs are a great way to conduct magic because they are made from the wood of the land, and generally a gemstone or crystal—a double potency of magic.”

“Cool,” I said before I could stop myself.

Marida smiled, unfamiliar with the term but had the educated guess it was a good thing.

I nodded. “It’s a lot to take in,” I said with a sigh.

“I can only imagine. You’re the first Keeper since the divide, so none of us are quite sure what it is you should be doing either. I know you think you are, but you’re not alone in this, Kaid.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, of course, we want you to get rid of the despicable wall, but that’ll be a whole new barrage of problems. Especially with Ainon. We need help here in the north, with doorways cutting off resources. We don’t even know the extent of that issue, and only know what our scouts discover. Sometimes the doors show up for a day or two and then are gone.
